Acid . LSD
What is it? Acid is an hallucinogenic drug which comes either in pill form or impregnated on a piece of blotting paper. It is sometimes known as trips, tabs, or by the designs that appear on the pills or paper, for example strawberries. It originally became popular during the sixties, and is now sometimes used within the rave scene. The highs Depending on the strength of the drug, its effects can last from 6 to 24 hours. |

| Because it is an hallucinogenic drug, users see and hear unreal illusions. Feelings, sensations and emotions are intensified. The lows Because all feelings are heightened, any fears, doubts or anxiety will be exaggerated and this can be quite frightening for the user. They can be left feeling extremely paranoid and anxious and there is no way of getting rid of this until the effects wear off. Some medics have claimed that those bordering on mental illness can become disturbed much more easily if they take this drug. |
Alcohol, Booze, Drink.
What is it?
One of the most commonly used drugs of them all, alcohol comes in many
different forms like wine, beer and spirits. Addicts sometimes turn to extreme
forms like chemical alcohol or meths. Alcohol is a depressant. The highs
It helps people relax socially. They can become more animated and it can appear to drown worries. It has been known to increase sexual desire. |

The lows
Within safe limits, alcohol is not dangerous. But drinking too much can cause
vomiting, dehydration and hangovers, (and drinking too much too quickly, can
lead to the risk of coma). It has been related to violence more than any other
drug. (It has also been identified as a causative factor in accidents). It is both
physically and mentally addictive and drinking too much over a long period can
cause liver damage. |
Amphetamines, Speed
What is it?
Otherwise known as speed or poor man’s cocaine, this generally comes
in powder form and is snorted up the nose. It can also come in pill form or be
injected. The highs Speed is a powerful stimulant which speeds up the entire nervous system. Energy and movement increase rapidly. Users may talk very quickly and find it difficult to keep up with their thoughts. |

The lows
Users often experience feelings of tiredness and depression afterwards,
and in the long run, can feel physically and emotionally exhausted. The drug is
psychologically addictive and can cause psychotic reactions. Regular users can find it difficult to give up. |
AMYL NITRITE, Poppers.
What is it?
This comes in liquid form in small bottles and the vapour from the bottle
is inhaled through the nose. The highs It reduces blood pressure and makes the heart pump faster, causing a “rush”, dizzness and sometimes a blackout. Some users claim it heightens sexual arousal. |

The lows
These include dizziness, blackouts, headaches, and vomiting. Amyl can be
dangerous to those who have low blood pressure or a heart condition and swallowing the drug is also dangerous. |
Cocaine, Charlie, Coke.
What is it?
This drug comes in powder form and is snorted up the nose with a straw or a
rolled up piece of paper. Occasionally, it is smoked with tobacco (especially in a
form known as crack cocaine) or rubbed on the gums. It is often diluted with
some other substance such as baking powder. It may also be injected.
The highs. Users have said they experience feelings of confidence, well being and energy when under the influence of the drug. It also reduces the desire for sleep or food. |

The lows
The drug can be mentally and physically addictive. Constant and frequent use
can result in exhaustion, nervousness, weight loss and damage to the nasal
passage. With crack cocaine, the craving for more is very strong and, in rare
cases, excessive doses can cause death from heart or respiratory failure. |
Heroin, Smack, H, Gear.
What is it?
One of a number of opiates derive from the poppy plant, heroin comes
most commonly in the form of a white powder which is either injected (after being mixed with water) or smoked (known as chasing the dragon). It is also known as horse.
The highs Heroin creates a rush of pleasure and users tend to feel they cannot be harmed and may feel detached from the outside world. |

The lows
Heroin is, both physically and emotionally, a highly addictive drug.
Withdrawal, once addicted, is difficult, and the symptoms include drowsiness,
sweats, bone and muscle pain, diarrhea, cramps, anxious breathing, vomiting and possibly even coma. Overdosing can be fatal, as can combining it with large amounts of alcohol. Sharing needles carries a greater risk of infection with HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis. |
Solvents . Sniffing
What is it?
Solvents are substances which are inhaled including glue, nail polish and
remover, lighter fuel, petrol, aerosols, cleaning agents and correction fluids.
The highs These include feelings of dizziness, euphoria, laughter and sometimes hallucinations. Effects last for up to an hour after inhalation. |

The lows
Sniffing can make the user feel sick and drowsy. More seriously, solvent
abuse can kill. Heart failure is possible; users may choke on their own vomit or
suffocate with their head inside a glue bag. There have been several tragic deaths through solvent abuse in this country in recent years. |
